On behalf of Miquel:
Desperta ferro! – The Kingdom of Aragon and
the Mediterranean, from Sicilian Vespers to
Tirant Lo Blanc.
Palma, 4th and 5th october 2025
After finishing its part in the Reconquista with the occupation of Murcia by Jaume I
(mainly to help his father-in-law Alfonso X of Castille), the Kingdom of Aragon directed
his interest to the Mediterranean.
The expansion began with the conquest of Sicily by Pere el Gran during the War of the
Sicilian Vespers. The Catalan Company followed, fighting for (or against, depending on
the mood) the Eastern Roman Empire. Some years later, after Aragon secured the
control of the Kingdom of Naples and part of Greece, Tirant Lo Blanc (almost) saved
the Eastern Empire after marrying the emperor’s daughter (© Joanot Martorell).
As Mallorca was in the middle of that mess, we chose “Desperta ferro! – Aragon and
the Mediterranean, from Sicilian Vespers to Tirant Lo Blanc” as the subject of the
second International DBMM Mallorca Open.
The allowed armies are:
• III/35 – Feudal Spanish
• IV/60 – Catalan Company
• IV/68 – Medieval Spanish (only [A] and [C] options allowed)
• And the allies, enemies and neighbours of the Catalan and Aragonese that
fought and settled along the Mediterranean:
o II/58 – Alan
o III/73 – Communal Italian (Sienese option excluded)
o III/77 – Papal Italian
o IV/4 – Feudal French
o IV/5 – Sicilian
o IV/22 – Serbian Empire
o IV/25 – Later Bulgar
o IV/26 – Lusignan Cypriot
o IV/31 – Nikaian Byzantine
o IV/32 – Romanian Frank
o IV/33 – Epirot Byzantine
o IV/34 – Trapezuntine Byzantine
o IV/39 – Navarrese
o IV/49 – Anatolian Turkoman
o IV/50 – Palaiologan Byzantine
o IV/51 – Morean Byzantine
o IV/55 – Ottoman
o IV/61 – Italian Condotta (only [VI], [VG], [N], [F], [Pi] and [GC] options allowed)

Services.
S’Escorxador is a former municipal slaughterhouse, situated in the limits of the 19th
Century urban expansion of Palma. It was designed by Majorcan architect Gaspar
Bennàssar in 1905. Nowadays is a civic and commercial centre with restaurants, a
cinema, a library and some multi-use spaces (where we will play our tournament). It is
at a 15 minutes’ walk from Plaça d’Espanya, one of the neuralgic centres of Palma.
There are many restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream shops in and around
S’Escorxador and in the nearby streets, particularly in Carrer Blanquerna.
A Tournament Dinner will be held on Saturday evening in a Majorcan cuisine restaurant
(partners are welcome, of course). Please let us know if you want to join in. Also let us
know if you have any allergies/special dietary needs.
If there are players interested, we can also hold a dinner on Friday evening to greet
players from abroad and criticize the organization.
Travel and accommodation.
Flights.
Palma is very well connected with many regional European airports and the costs can
be quite cheap if you are able to be flexible in your dates. There are many places to
see if you have the time, or even to relax on the beach and catch some rays. We would
recommend looking on Skyscanner or any other flight searcher to check flights.
Hotels
The price of these can vary considerably. There are some near the venue, but also
there are some good quality coastal hotels on the Platja de Palma (Cala Estància, Can
Pastilla, S’Arenal, etc.). Cala Estància and Can Pastila are quiet resort towns at 10
minutes from the airport (about 15 € in taxi or 5 € by bus A2). The venue is 20 minutes
by bus from there. As Palma’s public transport can be a bit erratic, we can provide lifts
from this area to the venue. We would recommend looking on Trivago or any other
accommodation searcher to check hotels.
The nearest hotels to the venue in Palma (less than 10 min walk) are:
• Ars Magna Bleisure Hotel **** https://arsmagnahotel.com/
• Hotel Amic Colon *** https://www.amic-hotels.com/hoteles-ami ... amic-colon
• Hotel Abelay ** https: //www.hotelabelay.es/es/home.html
